I hate you bitches who say, “There’s no ethical consumption under capitalism,” and leave it at that, with no effort made to dismantle the capitalism in question. Okay... so you admit there’s nothing ethical we can do in this colonial world. A good first step. Now what? How are we gonna make that different, babes? Consumption itself is a necessary condition for life. How are you gonna make it so there’s an ethical version? Or do you not care? Do you just need to have a little aphorism to justify your inaction?
And while we’re at it, fuck Lucy Dacus for that song Forever Half Mast. There was a time when I felt rather comforted by it—or did I? I think there was always a sort of sneaking feeling in me that it was a flawed song. What was the point of writing it? "Yes, you’re evil, but you’re not that bad, you put out your palm more than the back of your hand"... disassociating each of us from the colonial actions (back of your hand) that are required for us to sustain the lives that we do.
boom And I suppose it’s hypocritical of me to be coming down so harshly on people who say things like that, because here I am continuing to benefit from colonization just like everybody else, not really doing anything about it other than becoming more radicalized in private. It’s all a lifelong effort, I guess? No, that’s weak sauce. Cuz the "lifelong" could be cut short at any moment. Boom. Burst aneurysm. You never know.
